that the suspect, 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes who had been -- allegedly holding this boy in his backyard bunker all this time, that the suspect in the case is dead. kimberly, all of this began last tuesday afternoon. the boy was riding home on a school bus in this neighborhood, in this area where i am when a gunman boarded the bus, the bus driver positioned himself between the gunman and the children. the gunman opened fire fatally wounding mr. poland and one of the children was taken hostage. that child being that 5-year-old brought to a backyard bunker in the backyard of this suspect jimmy lee dykes, a 65-year-old who neighbors describe as very territorial someone who would become violent if neighbors or even a dog would venture anywhere close to his property. neighbors saying he harbored very strong anti government views. through out the standoff that ensued authorities kept a long line of communication with the suspect 24-hours a day through a pvc pipe that was providing ventilation from the surface down into under ground bunker. authorities releasing very few details about the discussions. the

any question as to what happened. they only informed us that the suspect 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes is dead. they had been trying to negotiate through out this ordeal which was about to go into a 7th day through out the ordeal. it sounded like negotiations were peaceful. mr. dykes allowing them to supply comfort supplies to the little boy. supplies such as medication, snacks, such as cheez-its and toys such as a red hot wheels car he requested yesterday. but today although they did not elabora elaborate, authorities say the negotiations started to go south and that is when they decided to storm the bunker. listen to what they said at a news conference moments ago. >> at approximately 3:12 this afternoon fbi agents safely recovered the child who has been held hostage for nearly a week. within the past 24-hours negotiations deteriorated and mr. dykes was observed holding a gun. at this point fbi agents fearing the child was in eminent danger entered the bunker and rescued the child. the child appears physically unharmed and is being treated at a local hospital. the subject is deceased

between themselves and jimmy lee dykes, but making every positive nuance they could get to connect him with that little boy. realize that mr. dykes we know was a father himself. he has a grown adult daughter. so all of these things would be very subtly rolled into the negotiations, and should mr. dykes be deceased at his own hands or at the hands of law enforcement, obviously that's a shame, but the thing that we want to see in a situation like this is, number one, we want the hostage to come out alive. number two, we want to protect law enforcement, and, number three, the hostage taker pretty much makes his own choice. for seven days they have extended to him the hand to come on out of that bunker and surrender himself. for seven days he's turned that down. he either made a decision himself today or law enforcement made a decision they were going to resolve it, and the positive thing is this little boy turning 6 on wednesday, he will be with his family to celebrate that birthday. >> well, as i say, our justice correspondent pete williams is reporting that a law enforcement official sa

that's been going on. jimmy lee dykes is the suspect. we've been informed by authorities there's been a major development in this case. that's about the only way they will classify what's happened. we have noted there's been some significant activity taking place on site. we saw two ambulances go and then leave the property. they didn't have their lights on. we've also seen clusters of authorities on site as well. all of this of course unusual from what weem been watching over the past several days. and then we've been told there's going to be a news conference and a fairly significant one in just a few minutes. there was a news conference that was held earlier today. it was by the local sheriff. and he insinuated for the first time there could be a motive to all this. listen to what he had to say. >> i can't really comment on anything specific. the communications, anything like that, that's been going on. what i can say generally is based on our discussion with mr. dykes, he feels like he has a story that's important to him. although it's very complex. we tried to make a safe environ

even prayers that were made for jimmy lee dykes, the man who is believed to be holding the 5-year-old boy. so they hope that his heart could be turned by the prayers today. that remains to be seen. afterwards though, there were people lining the funeral procession route as it headed towards the cemetery, and i talked to one woman, she is a bus driver of 23 years. she drove her bus, made sure she was on the route so the family saw her. tomorrow her school starts again for the first time since this incident, and i asked her how she felt about that. >> i know there wasn't anything going to happen, but it was just the thoughts of what happened behind that wheel, and as i drove it further down the road, i began to settle down, you know, and then when i got out here, i saw my children out here. they hugged me. they cried with me. you know, it kind of eased my fears and i know it eased theirs, too. >> reporter: really a remarkable scene there, don, because there's the bus driver with her bus with the children who ride the bus all supporting one another and wanting to show their support f
